DescriptionThe land on which this stately residence stands was acquired by patent deed from Lord Baltimore in 1753. The present house was probably started by John Funk, whose descendants owned it until the early Twentieth century. Then the late Chester A. Lyon purchased it and established an important herd of Golden Guernsey cattle here. Thus began Waynesboro’s famous “Antietam Dairy,” He and Mrs. Lyon purchased adjoining farms until their holding totalled approximately five hundred acres. - - Following the death of C. A. Lyon, his widow, an ardent lover of flora and fauna, continued on the place. In her last will, she endowed the Antietam Humane Society and left her real estate to Princeton University. Around thirty-five years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Allen M. Baumgardner purchased the mansion farm, and they are our hospitable hosts for Spring Garden Fest 2012. - - The dwelling house on “Antietam Farm” will not be open to the public during Spring Garden Fest, but the event will take visitors right onto the adjoining stone terraces and the spacious lawns sweeping from the house to Antietam creek. - - Visitors to “Antietam Farm” may also see the bank barn, springhouse, smokehouse, and various other dependencies, including the gazebo, or summerhouse. - - Spring Garden Fest includes nature walks led by three experienced gardeners, homemade tea-time refreshments, live musical performances, horse-drawn carriage rides ($3. Extra) by Keystone Carriage Company, and ice cream made in Wayneaboro courtesy of Antietam Dairy. - - Don’t miss this once in-a-life- time opportunity to spend an afternoon enjoying one of the most beautiful and exclusive places Art and Nature created along the historic Antietam creek.
