The FOUNDRY Artist Cooperative, located in DowntownChambersburg and home to an eclectic mixture of handmade works by artists from around Central
Pennsylvania, is set to launch a brand new initiative, SALVAGE SUPPLY – Art Parts for Creative Reuse, this Friday, March 2nd. The nearly new/gently used art & craft supply section within the Creative Space in the FOUNDRY will debut on First Friday with a fun SCRAPPED Competition, featuring four artists competing for the title of SCRAPPED Champion. The event will run from 6:00-8:00pm and is free and open to the public of all ages. The FOUNDRY is located at 100 South Main Street and can be found online at www.foundryartscoop.com.
“Most creative people have a small stockpile of supplies they purchased for special projects or to try a new medium and then never used again,” explains Anita Crawford, Operation Coordinator for the the FOUNDRY. “We think there are people around the area who can make good use of those supplies to create something amazing! The FOUNDRY is providing a location and calling on the community to donate unwanted supplies so they can go to a new home where they will be lovingly used.” Donations to the store are accepted during open hours each weekend: Fridays noon – 6:00 pm, Saturdays 9:00 am – 5:00pm, Sundays 11:00 am – 4:00 pm and Mondays noon-6:00 pm, or other times by appointment. A few examples of acceptable items are: paints, brushes, papers, canvases, embellishments, fabric, stamps, glass beads, yarn, frames, mat board, sewing supplies and art tools. A full list of supplies the store does and does not accept can be found here.
The name “Salvage Supply” and tagline “Art Parts for Creative Reuse” pays homage to the history of the organization’s 100 South Main location, which housed community cornerstone, Sherk’sHardware, from 1874-1980. When the FOUNDRY moved into the space, some basic renovations were done to reveal the original hardwood floors and brick and plaster walls to bring back the general store feel of the location. The addition of Salvage Supply plays into the memory a lot of residents have of coming to the store to pick out the parts they needed for projects.
To kick off the launch of the Supply section, The FOUNDRY is hosting a SCRAPPED Competition forits March First Friday event. Four FOUNDRY artists will call on their creative skills as they face off against one another to make prize-winning artwork. The catch? In each round, they have to use all the surprise Salvaged Supplies we provide them, however random or unlikely they might be. At the end of each round, a panel of three guest judges will “scrap” one artist who fails to measure up in terms of creativity, skill and presentation. The last artist standing takes home bragging rights of SCRAPPED CHAMPION!
“Think HGTV’s show, ‘Chopped’ cooking challenge,” Crawford says. “Replace the food with random art supplies and you have SCRAPPED. Our members are excited for the challenge and have been speculating what supplies they might receive. None of them will know until they open the box during
the competition.” In addition to the debut of Salvage Supply and the SCRAPPED Competition, the First Friday event will also host the opening of the March Gallery Exhibit, featuring Philadelphia-based fine-art printmaker and encaustic artist, Gillian Pokalo.
