“Support the Arts in Schools” on August 5th in downtown Chambersburg

The Downtown Business Council (DBC) and Council for the Arts of Chambersburg present the August First Friday First Friday celebration, “Support the Arts in Schools”, sponsored by Fitzgerald Auto Mall, on Friday August 5th from 5-8 pm in downtown Chambersburg.  For more information, call Lisa Myers at 717-264-1791 or find the Downtown Business Council of Chambersburg and the Council for the Arts -Chambersburg on Facebook.  Artists interested in participating should call 717-816-7568.

Tying the many artistic activities and offerings together along Main Street will be Downtown Chambersburg Inc.’s Window Walk on Main, at 8 storefronts between 115 N. Main and 151 S. Main, featuring murals from the 2015 Downtown Mural Project; and displays of artwork by local elementary school students, located in businesses throughout the downtown.

The North Main Street Founding Fathers parking lot (next to the Main Street Deli) will feature the Gad-Abouts Square Dance Club from 6-7:30pm (with a 10 year old caller!); United Way’s 4th Annual “Stuff the Bus” will be there from 5-8pm, offering First Friday participants a chance to donate school supplies for schools countywide; and Coyle Free Library will host a cornhole tournament. Chambersburg’s first Community Mural, drawn by Isaiah Zagar of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, and created by Chambersburg volunteers at ChambersFest, will be in place for all to see.

Tresa Paul will bring her Drum Circle to the Courthouse Plaza for the August 5th First Friday celebration of “Support the Arts in Schools”.

Local musician Tresa Paul will invite passers-by to join her Drum Circle at the Courthouse Plaza from 5-8pm.   Participants will learn basic rhythms, and play with favorite sports jams, rock songs and even commercials, with all the drums and other percussion instruments supplied.   Paul is a local music and art instructor, having taught guitar for the Cumberland Valley School of Music, and led music and art workshops for both CVSM and the Council for the Arts.

Also at the Courthouse Plaza, the Franklin County Photographers Club will set up a participatory photo booth, and the Chambersburg Police Department will offer fingerprinting kits. The Downtown Business Council tent will offer free face-painting for kids and First Friday Bingo cards, which can be played throughout the summer and into September. Bingo participants will visit downtown businesses to complete lines on a bingo card that features the many kinds of opportunities they can experience downtown. All confirmed bingos will be entered into drawings for cash prizes each First Friday, and the grand prize during October’s event.

On the F&M Quadrant of the Square, Everlasting Love Florist will be joined by the Cumberland Valley School of Music and the Robotics Program of Corpus Christi School.

On the Southwest quadrant, PA Starz will present tumbling demonstrations and a hands-on kids craft; sidewalk chalk for youngsters will be featured nearby, in front of Central Presbyterian Church.

The Foundry artists’ co-op at 100 South Main Street will offer new artwork on view and an interactive chalk wall; in the walkway just south of the Foundry, the Cumberland Valley Christian School’s Praise Band will be featured from 5-8 pm.

Wings That Buzz performing for Second Saturday concert on July 9 at Chambers Fort Park

On Saturday, July 9, Downtown Chambersburg will host its second “Second Saturday” concert for the summer, having band Wings That Buzz perform along with opening act solo artist Jon Ingels. The event is set to start at 5 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

Wings That Buzz is an all original band from Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Their unique blend of strong melodies, warm textures, and toe-tapping rhythms are both fresh and familiar. Fluid, energetic music and thought-provoking lyrics, about the joys and struggles of life, combine to create an uplifting sound that aims to inspire the listener and is as likely to get you moving too.

Jon Ingels is a guitarist and singer/songwriter from Waynesboro PA. Jon performs with the Slackwater 4 as well as the Blues Rock outfit Big Whiskey. In his solo performances Jon draws from all his influences ranging from blues to country, rock to reggae, and all points in between!

Following the performances, the movie “Back to the Future” – PG (1985) will be shown as a conclusion to the night. If interested in a fun night with music and a classic movie, be sure to attend! It’s bound to be fun for the whole family! Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnics.

Second Annual Stars, Stripes & Straws Contest taking place July 1

Celebrate First Friday in July for the 2nd Annual Stars, Stripes & Straws summer beverage contest! You can purchase your official drink glass on the Courthouse Plaza starting at 5 p.m. for $5 each. There will only be 150 available on a first come, first served basis.

Once you purchase your official drink glass you’ll receive a ballot with participating businesses listed. Sample the variety of beverages and vote for your favorite! All ballots must be turned in by 8 p.m. to be entered into a drawing to win a $100 gift certificate to the participating business of your choice!

DJ Big John will be set up on the Courthouse Plaza spinning fun summer tunes and leading kids’ games and contests. Also set up in the plaza will be face painting, Pap’s Dog Stop and Everlasting Love Florist.

The Foundry at 100 S. Main St. will host a Meet the Artist reception for their month-long exhibit, “Paintings by Heidi Yacoubian.” A rising senior at Greencastle Antrim High School, Yacoubian’s love of art first sparked in ninth grade and she hasn’t looked back since. There will also be a kids’ free make-and-take craft and a live metal-working demonstration near their location in the Ping’s walkway.

Also be sure to play First Friday Bingo! Participants visit downtown businesses to complete lines on the bingo card. All confirmed bingos are entered into drawings for cash prizes every First Friday. Visit the DBC Facebook page for more details.

On August 19, before the kids head back to school, join Scotland Campus for a night of comedy for the whole family. David Dean has been making people laugh for more than 25 years, and he is a published author who has also hosted dozens of mission trips to the Dominican Republic.

David Dean’s early days of training took place at Second City School of Improvisational Comedy along with performing at numerous clubs throughout Chicago.

He and good friend, Craig Gross, co-authored a book designed for parents titled, “Touchy Subjects” which just came out this month on Amazon.

David’s latest CD, “Clap For Me” can be heard on Laugh USA, Sirius Satellite Radio, iTunes and Pandora radio.

David and Saint Betsy, his wife of 26 years, live in Huntington, Indiana. They are the parents of two young adults, Alex & Hannah.
