WAYNESBORO—Renfrew Institute’s seventh annual Salamander Scramble 5K Fundraiser Run is set for Friday, July 4. The event is held in conjunction with Waynesboro’s Summer Jubilee Firecracker 5K, and begins at 8:30 a.m. on the Summer Jubilee grounds across from Waynesboro Hospital.

Institute board member and Scramble committee chair, Jeremy Bowersox, invites the public to participate in the 5K run, raising funds to support Renfrew Institute’s educational activities in the community. Runners for the institute must register separately through the institute as Salamander Scrambler team members. Team registration deadline is Friday, June 27.

“We hope to field a team of 125 participants who will run, walk—or ‘scramble’—in support of Renfrew Institute,” Bowersox said. “All fitness levels are welcome, and many ‘Salamanders’ walk the 5K route.”

Through pledges from friends or family, or from a direct donation by the participant, adult “Salamanders” will raise $100 each, and youth runners (through grade 12) will raise $50 each. Team members are eligible for prizes that include a two-hour kayak excursion, courtesy of Kirk’s Kayaks, on the Conococheague, where nesting bald eagles have been sighted. Additional awards include Powerstep orthotics donated by Advanced Chiropractic Care, gift certificates for area eateries, “fitness gear” items and more.

“This year marked our second ‘Couch to 5K’ program, thanks to personal fitness trainers, Michelle Benshoff and Ashlyn Shockey,” said Tracy Holliday, Renfrew Institute’s assistant director and event coordinator. “The program was a great success, and we are looking forward to seeing some new faces among our Scramblers this year.”

All Salamander team members receive training support, including the Couch to 5K program, plus paid Firecracker 5K registration, an eco-performance Salamander Scramble t-shirt, and fundraising support, along with a one-year membership to Renfrew Institute.

Lead event sponsor is Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home. Additional underwriting support provided by Cornerstone Family Dentistry; Quan and Tammie Tran, (Mes Reves restaurant in Bloomfied, NJ); John Hershey, III, Sr., Vice-President Hershey-Fitzsimmons Group; Arlene Unger, ReMax Associates, Waynesboro Physical Therapy, WACCO Properties, Inc.; B&H, Inc. Lawn and Floral; Eichholz Flowers and Waynesboro Waterworks.

Advanced Chiropractic Care, Michelle Benshoff and Ashlyn Shockey and the Waynesboro YMCA are in-kind donors. Support also provided by Today’s Horizon Fund Contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation, APX Enclosures, Inc., and the Carolyn Terry Eddy Family: Carolyn, with daughters Connie Fleagle & Kim Larkin. Additional sponsorships are welcome.
