SUMMARY:Fly Fishing Adventure Camp | Buttonwood Nature Center\, Waynesboro
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday & Thursday July 9th & 10th\, 2025 * 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM\nArea students are invited to join Buttonwood Nature Center at Orvis Hill Country for a 2-day outdoor adventure camp—learn all about fly fishing\, the art of fly-tying and so much more on the beautiful property of Orvis Hill Country.\nOverview: Experience the joy of fly fishing as you spend two days outside. \nLearn the various skills needed for fly fishing such as fly tying and fly casting while you delve into limnology\, freshwater biology and the aquatic critters that live there. \nSpend some time exploring the area during a hike around the grounds of Orvis Hill Country.\nThe camp is part of Buttonwood’s series of DISCOVER programs for students in grades 5–12 (ages 10 to 17)\, and the program combines fly fishing with earth science\, limnology and biology.\nThe camp runs for two days\, Wednesday and Thursday\, July 9th & 10th\, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM each day.\nThree program rotations each day feature a variety of activities; a break for lunch is also part of the schedule.\nWith instruction by Orvis’s fishing experts\, students will learn fly fishing essentials like rod rigging and essential knots\, gear and tackle\, stream entomology\, fly selection\, how to “read water\,” and how to play\, land\, and safely release fish. \nIn addition\, Buttonwood staff will guide students in learning about freshwater biology\, including pond vegetation as well as macroinvertebrates and other aquatic “critters” like fish and amphibians that inhabit freshwater bodies in our region.\nLimnology—the study of biological\, chemical\, and physical features of lakes and other bodies of fresh water—will also be introduced during the camp.\nAn “exploration hike” in the nearby woods\, guided by a Buttonwood Nature Center faculty naturalist\, allows students to discover many wonders of nature and will include forest ecology\, geology\, and plant identification. \nThe camp is open to students who have completed grades 5 through 12 (ages 10 to 17).\nThe fee is $100 for members of Buttonwood Nature Center/The Institute\, and $110 for the general public. \nRegister Here
