The Institute Presents, How to Identify Trees and Shrubs

Thursday, February 25th, 2021 *  7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Ryan Davis, Pennsylvania Forests Projects Manager for the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, presents a program on tree and shrub identification. The program is free and offered online via Zoom.
“I used to give loads of in-person tree ID workshops,” Ryan said, “but had to change that up with COVID. So now, rather than teaching with the plants in person, I teach how to get proficient on identification on your own.”
Ryan grew up on the coastal plain of Virginia and North Carolina, where he spent his time roaming the woods and catching all the fish and bugs that he could. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology with a minor in Forestry at North Carolina State University.
A professional wildlife biologist, Ryan worked in North Carolina, Nevada, and Missouri before earning a master’s degree from West Virginia University in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology.
Ryan joined the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay in 2017, where he is program manager on the Chesapeake Forests team. He focuses on forest conservation and restoration within the watershed in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York.
When not working Ryan is outside as frequently as possible. “My happiness is strongly correlated to the amount of mud and sunshine I’m exposed to,” Ryan said. He loves hiking, fishing, hunting, biking, and trying to identify every plant, animal, and fungus he comes across.
