From the Revolutionary era to the 20th century, women of Franklin County contributed to a young country, helped shape a strong foundation of Franklin County, and contributed to the well-being of communities, large and small. Join the Franklin County Visitors Bureau at the 11/30 Visitors Center on the square in Chambersburg, 15 South Main Street, for a panel discussion: Famous Women of Franklin County PA on March 23,
1 PM to 3 PM.
The panel will include discussion of Franklin County women, such as Margaret Cochran Corbin, Harriet Lane, Dolly Harris, Mary B. Sharpe, Margaret Disert, Kathryn Keller, Emma Nicodemus Geiser, and Zelda Barbour Wynn Valdes. Some were born in Franklin County. Some were educated in Franklin County. Some spent their lives in Franklin County. All these women have a story of inspiration.  Be inspired! The event, held in the second floor Great Room of the 11/30 Visitors Center, is free and open to the public.
March is Women’s History Month. Decade after decade and century after century, women make it happen! The “her” stories of Franklin County showcase a variety of catalyzing and contributing women.
Presently, many women consider the right to vote as a significant step forward for the gender. Women’s right to vote was secured by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution on August 18, 1920. Yet, a century earlier, property rights of women were very limited. It took until 1821 for states to start passing married women’s property acts, giving wives the right to own property.
