Franklin County, PA is well-known for its tradition of fine Pennsylvania-Kentucky style longrifle-making. One craftsman in particular, master gunsmith John H. Johnston (c.1809-1889), spent his entire working life in Waynesboro, manufacturing longrifles for over 50 years. Apprenticing under Henry Carlile, celebrated gunsmith of Shippensburg, PA, Johnston employed elements of what is known as the Chambersburg School of rifle-making; his work is now recognized as being among the finest examples found in the region. His son went on to found the successor firm Great Western Gunworks in Pittsburgh which was in production through 1923. Join presenter Wayne Martz for an informal conversation about the beauty, quality, and legacy of Franklin County Pennsylvania-Kentucky longrifles, with special focus on the work of J. H. Johnston. Wayne will share examples from his personal collection along with those on exhibit at Renfrew Museum and Park.
