Folklore & Coal Mining Songs of the Northeast w/Jay Smar | Coyle Free Library, Chambersburg
Thursday May 14th, 2026 * 6:00 PM
Join us for an informative & historical program, accompanied by original and documented songs of Northeastern Pennsylbania.
Travel back to the early 1900’s with songs that highlight the lives and struggles of European coal miners of the region.
Songs will be performed by Jay Smar, the grandson of a coal miner who worked in Schulkyll and Carbon County for more than 50 years.
Songs sung by miners and recorded by folklorist/journalist George Korson of Pottsville, PA, will be performed.
Additionally, songs about contemporary issues will also be performed, such as “The Fires of Centralia,” documenting the 50-year -old coal fire that burns until this day.
Vocals will be accompanied by guitar, claw-hammer banjo, and more.
To emulate the mining musicians of this region, Mr. Smar will sing, fiddle, and flat-foot clog-dance simultaneously to highlight the end of the program.
N.E.Pa coal books, chronicles, pay scales, photos, and related coal mining articles are also displayed at each performance for public view.
