The Middleburg/Mason-Dixon Line Historical Society will meet at the State Line Ruritan Building, 15481 Park Drive, located off Route 11 at the State Line, PA Community Park.

Guest speaker will be Susan Lyons, a retired public school teacher from Shippensburg, PA and docent at the Franklin County Historical Society.

The program will be “Chambersburg’s Own Martin R. Delaney: Physician, Journalist, Highest Ranking African American Field Officer of the Civil War, and Father of Black Nationalism.”

Susan will share the remarkable story of Martin Delaney, a free person of color born in Charles Town, VA (now WV), who spent his formative years in Chambersburg, PA.

He was one of the first three Black men admitted to Harvard Medical School but was turned away after White students and faculty protested.

A multifaceted man, he dedicated his life to the improvement of living conditions for his race.
