August is National Peach Month and peach eaters for decades have known that “Chambersburg peaches” are among the sweetest and juiciest. Franklin County orchards have been bearing delicious peaches all summer and many are expected to be producing through Labor Day. There are many ways to enjoy Franklin County’s 100-year-old sweet, golden treasure! Near and far, Chambersburg is known for delectable, juicy peaches.

Franklin County is home to more than 20 farm stands, farmers markets and locally owned grocery stores who celebrate peaches each year. With a longer shelf-life, purchasing peaches and other local produce is the freshest option and provides an opportunity for consumers to take in the most nutrition and flavor possible. In addition to simply enjoying fresh peaches from local vendors, there are other great ways to enjoy them with other locally made products.

Visit the Butcher Shoppe in Chambersburg and grab a jar of locally made Pappy J’s BBQ. With a dash of hot sauce, a little local honey, peach preserves and some cut up, fresh peaches you will have a perfect peach glaze for Summer grilling!
How about a refreshing adult beverage? Located in Jim’s Farmers Market (open Fridays & Saturdays) and Boyer Cellars, JanZell Wines is a local winery with a variety of sweet and dry wines that incorporate local flavors. Try a peach!
What makes these peaches so desirable? Franklin County has the rich soil and ideal climate for these sought-after peaches, such as the Redhaven peach, often compared to the Georgia peach. Other well-loved peaches that are in peak harvest through Labor Day are the Donut Peach, White Peach, Cresthaven, Sunhigh, and Baby Gold with freestone, cling-free and clingstone varieties.
