Pine Hill Recreation Area, 12684 Mentzer Gap Rd, Waynesboro, Pa.
For kids in grades K–5.
Students will go on a guided “wondering walk” through the forest, and learn how humans keep warm in the winter.
Students work together with others to gather a variety of natural materials like branches and leaves, and build a lean-to structure or fort, requiring collaborative creativity and teamwork.
This program introduces STEM concepts through problem solving.
Cost: $6 for Institute members; $7 general public.
Kids observe nature in the park and forest, and create guided art projects based on nature. They will create a wax-resist wall hanging on fabric with oil pastels and liquid watercolor paint, and make line drawings based on patterns seen in nature, while exploring the use of natural items as paintbrushes. Class is outdoors, so participants should dress for the weather. Fee includes both days.
