TomatoesJoin Master Gardeners for this popular event on Saturday, August 22, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Tomato Tasting tent is the most popular destination where visitors do a blind taste test of over 20 different tomatoes. At the end they receive a key to discover the tomato varieties. Visitors can also taste and vote for the “People’s Choice” award.

Tomato and Salsa contests will be held again this year. Contest registration deadline is August 19. To register, please contact the Extension Office at 717-263-9226. Entries must arrive at the Extension Grounds by 11 a.m. on August 22 for the judging.

The Tomato Contest features two categories: Largest Tomato (for both adult and youth) and Ugliest Tomato. Awards for both of these contests will be announced at 12 noon.

The Salsa Contest features three categories: 1) Classic with tomato as the main ingredient, 2) Fusion for the creative chefs using fruit or other bases and 3) Hot & Spicy for those who like to feel the burn. Competitors should bring their salsa and recipes along with a bag of chips. Salsa awards will be presented at 1 p.m.

Join the fun and enter one or all of the contests.

There will also be a display of floral arrangements using seasonal flowers, greens, herbs and vegetables from both the demonstration and the home gardens of the Master Gardeners.

T-Shirts supporting the “Save Monarchs, Plant Milkweed” project will be for sale at a cost of $14 each.
