Geology Rocks! “What’s on the Other side of the Mountain?”, The Institute

Thursday May 4th, 2023 * 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Presented in partnership with the Franklin Co. Rock & Mineral Club. Geologist Jeri Jones Jeri Jones of Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove, Pa. returns to present another fun, fascinating look into our shared geological history.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
This is an in-person event, but a Zoom option is also available.
Contact us for the Zoom meeting link: info@natureandcultureinstitute.org.
In this year’s program, Jones will discuss the rocks, topography and mineral resources east of South Mountain.
The PowerPoint program will cover the geology of Adams and York counties and be used as an introduction to the geology field trip to York County on May 6.
The rocks east of South Mountain are both older and younger than those in the Waynesboro area and span 300 million years in geologic time.
The oldest complex marine animal—the trilobite—and the most famous fossil animal class—dinosaurs—are found only a few miles apart.
The presentation will highlight the several continental collisions, a rifting continent and widespread ocean.
Door prizes and free rock and mineral samples will be a part of the program.
Questions welcome.
A geologist for more than 30 years, Jones has conducted extensive research on Pennsylvania mining practices, authored several publications, and narrated a 3-part video series on regional geology known as “TimeWalk.”
He has been on the faculties of several regional colleges.
This event will be held at:

I am…We Are Valiant, A Women’s History Celebration – 11/30 Visitors Center

I am…We Are Valiant, A Women’s History Celebration – 11/30 Visitors Center

Free!
March is Women’s History Month, and Franklin County Visitors Bureau invites you to celebrate at “I Am…We are Valiant,” on March 25, 1 PM to 3 PM, at the Franklin County 11/30 Visitors Center in downtown Chambersburg.
Poet, author, pastor, and performer Carla Christopher is the featured speaker.
Ms. Christopher will bring her message of love, hope, and inspiration as she shares the every day courage of women.
The presentation will take place in the second floor Great Room of the 11/30 Visitors Center.
Women are courageous everyday and often do not realize their own courage.
President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation to establish National Women’s History Week, the precursor of Women’s History Month, during the week of March 2-8, 1980.
In his message, President Carter recognized women throughout America’s history, who:
“Too often…were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed.
But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.”
Throughout March, the lobby of the Franklin County 11/30 Visitors Center pays tribute to valiant women on the Wall of Women, featuring local, regional, national, and international women of inspiration.
The public is invited to participate in the exhibit. Identify a valiant woman, share a photo, a few lines about why the chosen woman is valiant or her positive influence.
Join Franklin County Visitors Bureau and be part of spotlighting Women’s History as American History.
