The public is invited to commemorate 150th Anniversary of Historic Zion Union Cemetery in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania — a sacred place of remembrance, resilience, and African American history.
Founded in 1876, Zion Union Cemetery holds a unique place in our nation’s story as the largest known private burial site of veterans from the famed 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the regiment immortalized for its courage during the Civil War. Of the 88 men from the Mercersburg area who enlisted in the United States Colored Troops (USCT), at least 38 Civil War veterans are buried within these grounds, including 13 soldiers of the legendary 54th Massachusetts.
As we gather to honor 150 years of history, we will remember the sacrifices of these brave men, celebrate the generations of families connected to this hallowed ground, and recognize the enduring legacy of the African American community of Mercersburg and the surrounding region.
Please join descendants, friends, historians, veterans, and community members as we pay tribute to those who served, preserved freedom, and helped shape our nation.
