The Middleburg/Mason-Dixon Line Historical Society | Monthly Meeting

Thursday May 18th, 2023 * 7:00 PM
Guest speaker is Todd Dorsett from Waynesboro, PA.
Mr. Dorsett is a graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s University and Wake Forest University of Law, executive director of Antietam Historical Association in Waynesboro, and vice-president and acting superintendent of Green Hill Cemetery Association in Waynesboro.
The program will be “Escaped from Harpers Ferry, Captured at Mont Alto: The Misadventures of Captain John E. Cook.”
John E. Cook, an impetuous young man of privilege, went west to oppose pro-slavery settlers in Kansas.
There Cook met abolitionist John Brown, who made him a lieutenant in the planning and execution of the raid on the US Armory and Arsenal in Harpers Ferry, October 1859.
When the raid failed, Cook escaped northward but was captured at Mont Alto Furnace.
The public is invited, free.  Visit www.middleburgmasondixon.org or call 301-739-0357.
The Middleburg/Mason-Dixon Line Historical Society will meet at the State Line Ruritan Building, 15481 Park Drive, located off Route 11 at the State Line, PA Community Park.
